BBB serving San Diego, Orange and Imperial Counties continued a tradition on December 2nd by hosting its 17th Annual Torch Awards for Marketplace Ethics. Five lucky local companies received a Better Business Bureau Torch Award in recognition of their unmatched dedication to ethics and integrity in the San Diego marketplace.
BBB’s Torch Awards for Marketplace Ethics, now in its 17th year, is a staple in the local business community – attracting attention from small and large businesses alike. Hosted to acknowledge businesses that maintain a commitment to excellence and transparency, the Torch Awards program celebrates not those whom have seen unfettered growth and success, but those who maintain a strong connection and commitment to treating customers, employees, vendors and the community with respect and honesty.
The companies chosen by BBB each year, and especially in 2014, don’t just post their mission statement and values in their brochure, but live by these ideals each day, upholding the standards by which they were founded. “Each year we honor the companies in our local marketplace that epitomize ethics and integrity. This year, we couldn’t be more proud of our winners and finalists,” said Sheryl Reichert, President/CEO of BBB serving San Diego, Orange and Imperial Counties. “These are the businesses that have maintained a steadfast commitment to doing what’s right by their customers at a time when so many others struggle to remain accountable.”
BBB recognized five winners and eight finalists this year. The winners were (categories were based on number of employees which appear in parenthesis): Vows From The Heart Ministries (1-4), Murray Lampert Design, Build, Remodel (5-10), My Lineage (11-24), Toyota Certified Center of Santee (25-99), and ASI Hastings (100-249).
The finalists included: On-Site Tech Support (1-4), RSVP Publications (5-10), K-Co Construction (5-10), RJS Law (11-24), Baker Electric Solar (25-99), Ideal Plumbing, Heating, Air & Electrical (25-99), Meridian Auto Parts (100-249), and Bill Howe Family of Companies (100-249).
BBB realizes, though, that businesses with such commitments are born because of the individuals internally that uphold these values. Therefore, in conjunction with the Torch Awards, BBB conducts the Torch Awards Scholarship program and offers cash scholarships to five local students who express the importance of ethics in the marketplace in outstanding essays. To be eligible for this scholarship, this year’s students must be a member of the graduating class of 2015 or 2016, attend an accredited high school and live in San Diego or Imperial County. Evaluated by an independent panel of judges, this scholarship program has become extremely competitive and is a distinct honor for its winners!
The top five recipients were guests of honor at the 17th Annual BBB Torch Awards for Marketplace Ethics luncheon on December 2nd, where they were applauded and received their winnings. This year’s finalists included Matt Mullen from Torrey Pines High School ($500), Stephen Clark from La Jolla Country Day School ($750), Anton Cujec from High Tec High Media Arts ($1,000) and Monica Cooper from Mater Dei Catholic High School ($1,250).
This year’s recipient of the $1,500 scholarship was Tristan Curnow, a 2015 graduating senior from Fallbrook High School. Attendees of the 2014 Torch Awards were treated to a presentation of the winning essay as Curnow himself read it aloud, reflecting upon the lack of ethics in the marketplace today and the importance of doing what’s right, even when no one is watching.
This year’s Torch Awards for Marketplace Ethics would not have been possible without the support of our sponsors including: Sycuan Casino, SDG&E, The San Diego Business Journal, Viejas Casino, Barney & Barney, Barona Casino, Jack in the Box and more.
BBB serving San Diego, Orange and Imperial Counties would like to thank all sponsors, attendees and entrants of this year’s awards – as well as congratulate all of our winners and finalists!
